Medium Hand Painted Shoes

The Artist Evi Kokkinou discovered the shoe trees (lasts) in her grandfather's storeroom in his original shoemaking workshop. They had been left forgotten on shelves, reminders of a bygone time when items were made on the island, and not imported. They represent human stories and dreams; of handmade shoes worn with love and pride.

Evi decided to give them a new lease of life taking the wooden shoe trees and making them into works of art. Putting her own ideas, colours and interpretations onto each unique piece. Creating a bridge from the 1920's, when they were originally crafted, to the new Millennium where they can adorn new homes and be admired for their history and artistry.

In Cyprus shoe trees were given as lucky charms on New Year's Day, to ward off evil spirits and keep the evil eye away from houses.
